Migrating Information To Your New iPhone

There are three different ways to migrate data from your old iPhone to your new one: Quick Start, iCloud, and iTunes. Before migrating, there are a few things to do first.

Unpair Your Apple Watch From Your Old iPhone

By unpairing your Apple Watch from your old iPhone, you’ll be free to pair your Apple Watch with your new iPhone when it arrives.

Open the Watch app and tap on your Apple Watch at the top of the screen. Tap the Information button next to your watch, then tap Unpair Apple Watch.

Save A Backup From Your Old iPhone

We recommend saving a backup of the information on your old iPhone just in case something goes wrong during the migration process to your new one. Check out our other articles to learn how to backup your iPhone to iTunes or iCloud.

Move Your SIM Card To Your New iPhone

If you’re going to keep your SIM card, now is the time to transfer it over to your new phone. If you’re switching wireless carriers, or if your wireless carrier is sending you a new one, you can skip this step.

First, grab a SIM card ejector tool or a straightened out paperclip. Press it into hole in the SIM card tray to pop open the tray. Remove the SIM card from the tray, then push the empty tray back into your iPhone.

Open the SIM tray on your new iPhone and put your SIM card inside. Now you’re all set and ready to go!

Set Up Your New iPhone With Quick Start

Quick Start is the easiest way to set up your new iPhone. Turn on your new iPhone and hold it close to your old iPhone. Wait for the Set Up New iPhone prompt to appear on your iPhone.

An animation will appear on your new iPhone that looks like a blue circle. Hold your old iPhone over your new iPhone until the Finish On New iPhone prompt appears. You may have to enter your old iPhone’s passcode too.

From here, you’ll go through the standard set up process with your new iPhone. This includes setting up Face ID or Touch ID, logging into your Apple ID, and more.

Set Up Your New iPhone With iCloud

To set up your new iPhone from an iCloud backup, tap Restore From iCloud Backup on the Apps & Data menu during the setup process.

Set Up Your New iPhone With iTunes

To set up your new iPhone from an iTunes backup, tap Restore From iTunes Backup on the Apps & Data menu during the setup process.

Connect your new iPhone to a computer running iTunes using a Lightning cable. Click on the iPhone icon near the upper left-hand corner of the screen.

Click Restore Backup and choose the iTunes backup you’d like to restore your new iPhone with. Keep your iPhone plugged into your computer as the backup is restored onto your new iPhone.

What To Do After Receiving Your New iPhone

Turn Off Your Apple ID On Your Old iPhone

You’ll want to turn off your Apple ID on your old iPhone if you intend to sell it or return it as part of an upgrade program. If you don’t turn it off, there’s a chance the next person to get your iPhone may have access to all the information associated with your Apple ID.

Open Settings and tap on Your Name at the top of the screen. Scroll down and tap Sign Out. Finally, enter your Apple ID password, then tap Turn Off.
