You’re texting a new friend in the Messages app and you want to save them as a contact. You’re looking for the information button, but you can’t find it! In this article, I’ll show you how to create new contacts from Messages on an iPhone.
How Did Creating New Contacts Change With iOS 12?
On earlier versions of iOS, the Information button already appears in the upper right-hand corner of the screen when you open a conversation in Messages. If your iPhone is running iOS 12 or newer, there’s an extra step — you have to tap the number before the Information button appears!
How To Create New Contacts From Messages On iPhones
First, open Messages and tap on the conversation with the person you want to add as a contact. Then, tap on their phone number or profile picture (it’ll probably be blank) above the conversation. When you do, four new buttons will appear. Tap the info button.
Next, tap Create New Contact. Finally, type in their name and any other information you know about them, then tap Done in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

Doesn’t work with iPhone 15. At least what you are describing.
on my iphone, not sure which, after hitting ‘info’ i have to hit a tiny feckin arrow on top right then i get the ‘create contact’ frame. ROTTEN GUI … this would fail university.. where is the affordance ? where is the visibility? one of the most desirable features is buried under 4 unintuitive steps .. are they havin a giraffe ?

Very helpful thank you, it’s not at all obvious and most other help sites don’t explain this well.
I am able to save the contact information from my iPhone XR, but the contact doesn’t save in my Contacts list. It only exists in text message information. How do I migrate this information to the Contacts list?
I have done the above for 4 different new numbers. Each time it saves and shows the person’s name in messenger for the first few minutes. But as soon as I leave the app and go back in to messages it is as if I never saved it. But, it shows in contacts. I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong?
Doesn’t work. I have tried everything and still can’t add a contact from text. I will probably go back to Android.
When I add a contact through text messaging, it doesn’t move that person into my contacts app. How do I make it show up in the contacts app?
Thank you !! Update: I’m on iOS 14.4 and it actually a little different. Tap on the message, tap on the phone number, tap on the Info button, tap on the Info button again, tap on Create New Contact.
you say to tap on the info button twice, there is only one option to tap on it after you open the number, then you get the option to create new contact. When I do this it shows the persons name in messages but does not add it to the contacts list. Not sure how you get tap the info button twice, the order is tap the message, tap the arrow next to the phone number, tap the info button and THEN you get the create new contact option…..but as I said it doesn’t add the name or the phone… Read more »
Very Helpful – was driving me crazy too. Shouldn’t need so many steps to do this!
Perfect, worked exactly as directions state. Thanks.
Thank you! This was driving me crazy!
Have followed this to the letter and when I hit create contact it calls the contact! Dont want to call them just want to record them as a contact
I’m having the same issue!
This doesn’t work at all. when you tap on the second number – the contact creation does not come up!
After the number appears again, tap info again, then tap Create New Contact
