Is The iPhone 13 Waterproof? Here’s The Truth!

You’re thinking about getting the new iPhone 13, but want to know more about its technical specifications. Ever since the iPhone 7, Apple’s flagship product has been increasingly water-resistant. In this article, I’ll answer the question: is the iPhone 13 waterproof?

iPhone 13 Waterproof Rating

The iPhone 13 has an ingress protection rating of IP68. It can be submerged in up to 6 meters of water for up to thirty minutes.

Every iPhone since the iPhone 7 has received an ingress protection (IP) rating to assess its water-resistance. Every IP rating has two digits.

The first digit ranges from 0–6 and measures a device’s protection against solids, such as dust and dirt. The second digit ranges from 0–8 and measures a device’s protection against liquids. A score of 8 means the device can be submerged beyond one meter of water, with the exact distance and time of submersion specified by the phone manufacturer.

Recently, an additional water resistance score was added to the Ingress Protection scale: 9k. An IP69k is theoretically more water resistant than a device rated IP68, but there are very few cell phones out there with this rating right now. It will likely be a few years before IP69k becomes the industry standard for cell phones.

Can I Use My iPhone 13 Underwater?

We don’t recommend using your iPhone underwater. An iPhone’s water-resistance wears down over time. Most people want to use their iPhone as an underwater camera, but they weren’t really designed to do that. If you do want an underwater camera, we recommend buying one specifically designed to function under water, like this camera made by Apexcam.

While you can’t really use your iPhone 13 as an underwater camera, a 2019 Apple patent indicates they’re trying to improve iPhone functionality underwater. A lot of this patent has to do with adding new hardware like a pressure sensor to determine if the device is being used underwater safely.

Keeping Your iPhone Safe Around Water

If you plan on bringing your iPhone 13 to the beach or pool frequently, consider getting a waterproof pouch. Reliable waterproof pouches can be purchased on Amazon for as little as $10. For more tips, check out one of our latest YouTube videos!

My passwords synced between my iPad and iPhone as soon as I logged in to my Apple account.

One drop in the water for 3 seconds and the charging port is wet and declined a charge. I would not even call it water-resistant!

All I can say is that for the price of these phones they should do your laundry and load the dishwasher. Realistically though, I might take mine out on a boating adventure or two while it’s still new to record a video or two. Outside that it will be put in a 100% H2O case probably for the remaining life I have (it will take me that long to get the phone paid off and I do not buy every phone that Apple comes out with). That’s why I got the 1 TB iPhone 13 Pro Max. Oh one more… Read more »
