My iPhone Won’t Turn On Past The Apple Logo! Here’s The Fix.

    Categories: Display

While booting up your iPhone, you realize it’s spending an unusually long time turning on. Your iPhone screen only shows the Apple logo and nothing else and you don’t know what to do. In this article, I’ll explain what to do when your iPhone won’t turn on past the Apple logo.

Why Won’t My iPhone Turn On Past The Apple Logo?

When you turn your iPhone on, it initializes the software and checks all the hardware to make sure it’s working properly. The Apple logo is displayed on your iPhone while all of this is happening. If something goes wrong along the way, your iPhone won’t turn on past the Apple logo.

Unfortunately, this is usually a sign of pretty serious problem. However, there’s still a chance it can be fixed.

If you’ve just replaced a part on your iPhone and are now having this problem, it may be a good idea to try to reseat that part. If you haven’t just replaced a part of your iPhone, follow the steps below!

Hard Reset Your iPhone

Sometimes forcing your iPhone to restart is all you need to do to fix the problem. Since your iPhone won’t turn on past the Apple logo, you’ll have to do a hard reset. The way to hard reset an iPhone depends on which model you have, so we’ve broken down the process for each device.

iPhone 6s, iPhone SE, & Earlier

Simultaneously press and hold the Home button and the power button (Sleep/Wake button) until the screen goes black and the Apple logo appears again.

iPhone 7 & iPhone 7 Plus

Press and hold down the volume down button and the power button at the same time. Keep holding both buttons until the Apple logo reappears on the display.

iPhone 8, iPhone X, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone 11

Start by pressing and releasing the Volume Up button. Then, press and release the Volume Down button. Lastly, hold down the side button. Keep holding the side button until the Apple logo appears. Remember to press the volume buttons at the beginning, or else you might accidentally send a message to your SOS contacts!

Put Your iPhone In DFU Mode

A Device Firmware Update (DFU) restore erases and reloads your iPhone’s software and firmware. This type of restore is also the last step you can take to completely rule out any type of iPhone software problem.

Below, we’ve broken down the DFU restore process for different models of the iPhone.

DFU Restore Older iPhones

First, connect your iPhone to a computer with iTunes using your charging cable. Then, press and hold the power button and the Home button at the same time. After about eight seconds, let go of the power button while continuing to press the Home button. Release the Home button when your iPhone appears in iTunes.

Start the process over from the very beginning if your iPhone didn’t show up in iTunes.

DFU Restore An iPhone 7 Or 7 Plus

Start by connecting your iPhone to a computer using a Lightning cable. Then, simultaneously press and hold the Volume Down button and the power button. After about eight seconds, let go of the power button, but keep holding the Volume Down button until your iPhone shows up in iTunes.

If your iPhone didn’t show up in iTunes, start over from the very beginning.

DFU Restore An iPhone 8, iPhone X, iPhone XS, And iPhone XR

Use a Lightning cable to connect your iPhone to a computer with iTunes. Next, press and let go of the Volume Up button, then press and let go of the volume down button, then press and hold the side button.

When the screen turns black, press and hold the volume down button while continuing to hold the side button. Wait about five seconds, then release the side button while continuing to hold the volume down button. Keep holding until your iPhone appears in iTunes.

We know this is a lot, so check out our video if you’d like us to walk you through the process!

Addressing A Potential Hardware Problem

If your iPhone still won’t turn on past the Apple logo, a hardware issue is causing the problem. This specific problem often happens after a botched repair job.

If you went to a third-party repair shop, we recommend returning there to see if they’ll fix the problem. Since they may be the ones who caused it, there’s a chance they’ll fix your iPhone, free of charge.

If you tried to replace anything on your own, you’ll want to get the iPhone back into its original state before taking it into an Apple Store. Apple won’t touch your iPhone or offer you an out-of-warranty replacement price if they notice that you’ve replaced components of your iPhone with non-Apple parts.

Puls is another great repair option you can turn to. Puls is an on-demand repair company that sends a qualified technician straight to your doorstep. They repair iPhones on-the-spot and offer a lifetime warranty on the repair.

    • If you've followed all the steps in this article and your phone still won't turn on past the Apple logo, then you should consider getting the phone repaired or replaced. If you can't interact with the phone at all, even to do a hard reset or a DFU restore, then there isn't anything you can do without a professional. If I had to take a guess, I'd say that there might be some kind of battery issue, but there really isn't enough information to tell.

    • no my phone is still turning on and off past apple logo no changes now im going to install itunes in my laptop and see wether it works or not

  • My IPhone 5 will only display the Apple logo and then off and it will repeat this cycle. I have tried doing the soft reset by holding the power and home buttons but nothing changes. Do you think this is repairable. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

    • I know that this is an iPhone 5, but it's possible that recent software updates have changed how hard resets work. Try holding down the volume down button and the power button to see if that initiates the hard reset instead. If you don't manage to get it to work, it might be hardware or firmware related. In that case, you should consider going to get it checked out to see if it needs repairs.

  • hi, every time i do this my phone just turns off and get re stuck on the apple logo again
