The Ultimate Guide To AirTags Batteries

You’re thinking about buying some AirTags to help keep track of your most important items. Unlike other Apple products, you can’t plug in an AirTag to charge it, and its battery is easy to remove. In this article, I’ll tell you everything you need to know about AirTags batteries.

What Type Of Battery Do AirTags Use?

While CR2032 batteries might not sound as familiar as AAA or D batteries, they are more common than you might expect. Many household electronics, including watches, remote controls, and kitchen scales, are powered by lithium coin batteries.

If you’re looking for AirTags batteries and you come across models labelled “ECR2032” or “CR 2032”, don’t worry! Both of these products will work just as well as a standard CR2032 battery.

Can I Charge An AirTag Battery?

Unlike other Apple products, you cannot charge AirTags. However, some companies sell rechargeable CR2032 batteries. While you can’t charge AirTags now, we suspect that a future generation of AirTags will have a built-in, rechargeable battery.

Can I Replace My AirTags Battery?

Yes, you can replace an AirTag battery — and it’s easy to do! AirTags have a removable battery cover designed to make changing out the battery as easy as possible. Unlike an iPhone or iPad, you should never need a technician’s help to put a new battery in your AirTag.

To replace an AirTag battery, push down on the metal casing on the bottom of the AirTag and twist it counterclockwise. Remove the metal casing and the CR2032 battery.

Insert a new CR2032 battery. Put the metal cover back on, push down, and twist it clockwise. That’s all it takes to replace an AirTag battery!

What Is The Battery Life Of AirTags?

In Apple’s AirTags press release, they claim an AirTag battery is designed to last for over a year of everyday use. This makes a lot of sense, considering much of an AirTag’s lifespan is spent just dangling from another object. Their only functions that require power are to emit a Bluetooth signal, and to make a sound from their built-in speaker when prompted.

The average user shouldn’t need to use their AirTags battery for an extended period of time. Unless you lose your tagged item or items on a regular basis, it’s likely that you’ll only need to replace the battery once every year or so.

FYI. This a quote from Apple’s support: “ CR2032 batteries with bitterant coatings might not work with AirTag or other battery-powered products, depending on the alignment of the coating in relation to the battery contacts.”. I bought Duracell, and I found out the hard way.

Coated batteries do not work! I tried and they didn’t work. You have to find uncoated batteries!

bitterant coated batteries work fine – simply remove the coating by wiping with an alcohol wipe or alcohol (isopropyl/rubbing) on a tissue.
